Summary:
Drawing on original surveys and interviews with active malicious hackers, this talk examines their motivations, decision-making, and modus operandi, including how they select targets, assess risks and rewards, respond to security measures, and adapt their tactics. It then considers how these firsthand insights can be leveraged to improve threat intelligence, strengthen cybersecurity solutions, and develop interventions that better anticipate attacker behavior.

Short bio:
Dr. C. Jordan Howell is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Criminology at the University of South Florida and CEO of Ventel, a threat intelligence company specializing in translating science into actionable cybersecurity solutions. His interdisciplinary research spans criminology, cybersecurity, information systems, and artificial intelligence. Drawing on real-time data from active malicious hackers, he examines offender motivations, behavioral patterns, and decision-making to develop evidence-based strategies for anticipating and disrupting cybercriminal activity. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Criminology, an M.S. in Cybersecurity Intelligence and Information Security, and graduate certificates in Digital Forensics, Strategic Intelligence, and Cyber Intelligence.
